Distinguished and Famous people from Mount Martha
🏡 Alexander and Emma Balcombe
Alexander and Emma Balcombe settled at the pastoral property now known as The Briars in 1846. The name recalled Alexander’s family home on St Helena, where the Balcombe household had accommodated Napoleon during the opening stage of his exile. That is a family connection with the emperor, not an unexpected Napoleonic visit to Mount Martha. Alexander farmed the Victorian property and developed vineyards; the homestead was completed in 1851. He also helped reserve foreshore land at what became Mornington Park. The Briars brings together a local farming household and a remarkable overseas family history, with surviving buildings and the Balcombe name preserving the association. Emma’s place in establishing the home belongs alongside Alexander’s in that story.
🎨 John Baird
John Baird lives and works at Mount Martha, making paintings, collages and sculpture that give everyday objects a distinctive visual life. Boats, domestic interiors and still-life arrangements recur in work that moves between recognisable subjects and flattened, abstract forms. His art is held in collections including the National Gallery of Victoria, Artbank and Castlemaine Art Gallery. A 2025 survey exhibition at Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery reviewed his long exhibiting career. Baird’s association with Mount Martha is a working one: the coastal community is his artistic base, adding a contemporary creative life to the area’s better-known historic households.
